My philosophy is...
It can get better.
Everything is unfolding as it should.
Destiny is a current that flows through your life, and you can choose to step into it at anytime.
We often know what will happen. We just don’t know when.
Making decisions is the secret to living well. Decision is the spell that casts Magic.
The things we can’t plan or control will take us places we never imagined for ourselves.
You only need to know the first step. The path will take you exactly where you need to go.
And also, some decisions make themselves.
The Experience Collection
When people discover my depth of knowledge about British Royal Family gossip and astrological transits, I like to joke that “I got range.” But it isn’t really a joke. My Experience Collection is my biggest asset, giving me a scope of understanding that enables me to see what others don’t see.
My Whole Story
I hope in my next lifetime to be blessed with a clear sense of purpose and destiny from the beginning.
I say that because in this lifetime, I seem to have been blessed with the opposite: Utter confusion about my career and life choices and a tendency to wander, experiencing many things as I seek the ones that fit my soul best.
At this stage, looking at forty, I’ve accepted that I am, first and foremost, an experience collector. My purpose is, perhaps, to simply experience many things so I can add them to my collection of memories and lessons learned.
The first time I left the well-worn trail–really left it and waved goodbye to the bewildered folks in my wake–was when I turned down scholarships from the nation’s top law schools.
I was twenty-three and didn’t have much of a plan besides “move to Tucson and find a job.” Which, it turns out, was all the plan I needed.
The job ended up being at a nonprofit, where I managed fundraising events and made $13 an hour. I remember being thrilled that I was offered health insurance–it was a Real Job!
Tucson became my home. At the beginning, I lived with my boyfriend in a two-bedroom bungalow at Grant and Country Club. I never thought twice about the life and career I’d given up because real life was too good to think about coulda-beens.
That relationship ended (although he retains top billing as My Favorite Ex-Boyfriend), but my relationship with the desert didn’t. Around New Year’s Eve of 2012, I moved my meager belongings–including a teeny tiny twin bed–into a third floor apartment at Skyline and Swan. My very first solo apartment. The place I got to be a grown up for the first time.
Now that felt like destiny.
But for the rest of my twenties and into my thirties, destiny would be something I saw only in the rearview mirror as I drove farther and farther away from it.
I got married.
I kept being offered jobs I didn’t want–foundations, real estate, public relations–bought houses I didn’t love, and joined groups I shared no values with–fundraising, ladies-who-lunch vibes.
But you learn more about destiny from the wrong moves than the right ones, and the lesson I learned from that time was how it feels to go the wrong direction in life.
Without a doubt now, I know when I’m moving away from my destiny.
When my ex-husband and I separated in early 2020, I also left the real estate business we’d been running together for five years.
I was sad…and I was free.
Everything I felt trapped by before–the clients, the house, the schedule, the social expectations–disappeared, almost overnight.
I spent COVID lockdown in another third story apartment, this one at Swan and Ft. Lowell. And I ferociously decided that I would bloom there, no matter what.
I bought furniture, I hung art, and I started to dream.
To really imagine what I wanted my life to be like, now that it was nothing like what it was before.
The next few years were a flood of vision board dreams coming true that culminated with leaving my job to become a full-time life coach.
That was in October 2023. The next month, my dad was diagnosed with cancer and I moved back to Indiana.
I’ve been here ever since.
Things didn’t go as I planned.
My coaching business didn’t take off, and after a year living in my hometown while my dad was in active treatment, I moved to Indianapolis and decided it was time to Get Serious about things like Paying My Bills.
I got certified in change management and found a job in Corporate America.
Corporate Communications and Change Management…that’s what I’m doing now.
Can you hear the sag in my shoulders when you read that? Feel it?
But the good news is that “now” never lasts long.
In fact, “now” is over.
And there it goes again.
And, once again, it’s over.
When I’m not at the day job, I write, think, coach, and dream about the experience I want to collect next.
And one day, when I’m really not at the day job, I’ll be blazing True North again.
Because while I’ve written and coached on a lot of topics like independence, personal evolution, and leaps of faith, the beating heart of my belief system is living with the courage and faith to build a life on my own terms. This is my True North, and everything I do is turned toward it.
I know that I look very conventional. Professional… corporate, even.
But inside, I’m a rolling stone, an alley cat, a spinster witch living in the mountains on the west side of town. I’m a wistful dreamer, a fairy sprite, a cloud nymph living in the insistence that the life I want is possible.
I don’t know what happens next. I never do.
But I know what happens when I follow what feels like destiny. I know where it leads:
A Big, Magical, “I can’t believe that happened” life.
That is why I’m here.
That is my destiny.
And that is what I am all about.
